Simona Halep Creates History by Topping WTA Rankings

Simona Halep created history by becoming the first Romanian to top the WTA rankings. Her success at the China Open 2017 to reach the latter stages of the event helped her achieve a much bigger success. After an incredible 2017, the 26-year-old has been able to top the WTA rankings by defeating Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals. She now becomes the 25th player in the history of the WTA to top the charts. Since computer rankings came into effect in 1975, only 24 women have been able to top the standings.

As a result of going into the new top position of the WTA, Simona Halep was able to overcome Garbine Muguruza into this top spot. Muguruza has been top of the standings for the last four weeks. Interestingly, the Romanian is not the only player having a substantial interest in holding the top spot. So far in 2017, the likes of Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber, and Karolina Pliskova have been able to top the rankings at various levels.

Meanwhile, Halep will just take a little time to swallow the news, as she has had gone through a huge surge with regard to her career. After having reached the WTA final for a fifth occasion this season, Halep will be looking to end the season on a high. The last 12 months has been an exhilarating journey for the 26-year-old from Romania, a country which has never provided a top players to the WTA rankings. She was able to win the Madrid open as it from reaching the final of the Italian, French, and Cincinnati Open. After the Wimbledon 2017, Halep became the active player to remain in the top 10 for the longest stretch. She has been in the top 10 of the WTA rankings since January 2014.
After having topped the rankings, Halep will be looking to extend her form and potentially get her first Grand Slam.
