Petra Kvitova came in with a dominant display in order to overcome Barbora Strycova in the quarter-finals of the China Open. The 6-3, 6-4 victory meant that the Czech Republic star was able to get into the semi-finals of the event for a third time. It was not a huge surprise to see Kvitova get a victory in this game, as she has been able to get 24 consecutive wins over Czech opponents. Kvitova claimed that she is extremely happy to have reached the semi-final and that is looking forward to coming up with another great performance to reach the final.
Kvitova had this comfortable victory due to 15 winners and coming up against just one break point in the first set. This was a huge foundation for the second set victory. Even though Kvitova was able to hit six double faults in the game, she always seemed to be ahead of the curve in terms of the first serve. One of the highlight elements of the match was her relatively slow performance in the second set, and Kvitova attributed this to the tiredness and the slow pace of the court. Even then, Kvitova is happy that she played well compared to the previous match.
As a result of the victory over Kvitova, the semi-finals of the China Open will see her go up against Caroline Garcia. This was a good outcome for Kvitova, she has managed to avoid Elina Svitolina. The latter has been on a decent run of form of late, while Garcia seems a bit inconsistent. As she was not able to drop any sets in the game against Strycova, the Czech Republic star should be relatively fresh coming into the semi-finals. This may hold a huge advantage ahead of a top opponent like Garcia at the China Open 2017.
