As it turned out, Rafa Nadal was spared from being a player in the decisive doubles match at the Laver Cup, and he had Roger Federer to thank for it.
With Team World having taken away 2 out of 3 games played on Sunday and arriving inside of 3 points from Team Europe, the 3-day event seemed to go down to the final match.
However, Federer had other ideas beating Nick Kyrgios and securing three points that would claim the Laver Cup for Bjorn Borg’s team. Consequently, that also spared Rafa from a having to play the final doubles match.
When asked if he would have actually went ahead and played if push came to shove, Nadal responded, “Of course if the captain wanted me there, I was ready. But I didn’t want to play and thanks to Roger and the rest of the team that we avoid that situation!”
Nadal played alongside Federer on Saturday in a doubles match where they would emerge winners. “It’s been an unforgettable three days, everyone knows I love a team competition,” Nadal said. He also twitted to thank Roger for his win.
Captain Borg was also all smiles about the performance his team had put on. “I’m very proud of my team. It was very nervous sitting on the bench but I’m very happy to be part of the Laver Cup.”.
