Maria Sharapova was able to reach the Tianjin Open quarter-finals after overcoming Magda Linette in a 7-5, 6-3 victory. Sharapova was recently knocked out of the China Open in disappointing fashion (watch the full match here), but she has managed to make up ground by reaching the quarter-finals for the third time in 2017. However, it could have been a much different outcome given that Sharapova was able to survive a major scare as early as in the first set. When she was having a 4-3 lead in the game, Linette was able to come with several breaks and get close to a surprise comeback.
Sharapova recovered substantially for the second set and was able to get a comfortable victory even though her second service game was broken. The Russian did come up with a break twice in the game, and it was more than sufficient to see her through. Even though the 71st ranked player from Poland was able to come up with some resistance at the start of the second set, it ultimately turned up into an easy victory for Sharapova. As a result of booking her place in the quarter-finals of the Tianjin Open, the Russian will be coming up against Stefanie Voegele. Voegele was able to get a 6-2, 6-3 win over Yulia Putintseva.
After the game, Sharapova claimed that she gained a foothold in the match once she was able to hold the first set serve. Even though she made a couple of errors in the game, she said that the difficultly from the first set had vanished.
