Grigor Dimitrov was able to get a great start to the China Open after winning his first round match against Damir Dzumhur. The 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory was relatively comfortable and the game finished in just under two hours. Dimitrov was able to add 35 more points to his tally after this first round victory. This was extremely crucial as he looks to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held in London in the second week of November. The reward for getting past Dzumhur is a match against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. The 29-year-old is making his debut at the China Open and he was able to overcome Pablo Cuevas with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win.
Del Potro claimed that he is feeling fresh and is already looking forward to the big clash with Dimitrov. The 29-year-old has labelled Dimitrov as a potential favourite for the tournament and not just a contender to reach the quarter-finals or semifinals. Yet, Del Potro expects to be ready for the second round game.
Meanwhile, Australian Nick Kyrgios was able to come with an impressive 12 aces in the game against Nikoloz Basilashvili. Kyrgios was able to get a 6-1, 6-2 win and the match finished in less than an hour. As a result, he has managed to set up a second-round match against Mischa Zverev from Germany.
Andrey Rublev was able to come up from dropping a set to overcome Jack Sock with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. He managed to reach the quarter-finals of the recent US Open title. The 19-year-old will be keen to continue his excellent start to the tournament, as he was able to come out successful in four out of the six break points. Rublev has now set up a match against Tomas Berdych, who beat Jared Donaldson in a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 match.
